Langkawi fica a 1hora de avião de Kuala Lumpur. É a maior ilha de um arquipélago de 100 ilhas a norte da Malásia, no mar Andaman (oceano Índico), quase na fronteira com a Tailândia.
É uma ilha relativamente pequena (tem cerca de 40 Km de comprimento) e é fácil e barato alugar um carro e percorrer toda a ilha em 4 dias.
Langkawi tem praias de água verde-azulada; rios, lagos e quedas de água naturais; magníficas formações rochosas de calcário; florestas equatoriais que são áreas protegidas pela UNESCO; templos; um teleférico e uma ponte suspensa extraordinária!

Langkawi is 1 hour by plane from Kuala Lumpur. It is the largest island of an archipelago of 100 islands north of Malaysia in the Andaman Sea (Indian Ocean), almost on the border with Thailand.
It's a relatively small island (about 40 km long) and it's easy and cheap to rent a car and travel all over the island in 4 days.
Langkawi has blue-green water beaches; rivers, lakes and natural waterfalls; magnificent limestone rock formations; equatorial forests that are UNESCO protected areas; temples; a cable car and an extraordinary sky bridge!

Vale a pena o frio na barriga para subir ao cume de Gunung Mat Chinchang, uma montanha espetacular, perto de Datai Bay e apreciar a vista soberba sobre a ilha... Lá em cima, a ponte suspensa por cabos de aço tem 700 metros de altura, 136 metros de comprimento e é imprópria para quem tem vertigens. Mas é absolutamente maravilhoso caminhar sobre as nuvens!
It is worth the chill in the belly to climb to the summit of Gunung Mat Chinchang, a spectacular mountain near Datai Bay and enjoy the superb view over the island ... Up there, the sky bridge suspended by steel cables is 700 meters height, 136 meters length and is unfit for those who have vertigo. But it is absolutely wonderful to walk on the clouds!
With some bargain, it's possible to ride a traditional boat exclusively for 2 by 62€ (300 RM) and make this tour completely at our own pace. Even with a tropical rain, it was beautiful to watch the eagles; contemplate the limestone rock formations and the mangroves on the banks of the river; stop at a floating station with fish farm and go inside small bat caves... Totally worth it!
É imprescindível visitar e até nadar em algumas das quedas de água naturais que caem das montanhas! Nós fomos a 3: Durian Perangin, Air Terjun Temurun e Telaga Tujuh (as famosas 7 Wells waterfalls com 638 degraus até ao topo).
À volta de Langkawi existem imensas ilhotas e a melhor forma de as explorar / contemplar é andar pela costa em Jet ski. Estes passeios organizados custam entre 120€ e 160€ (600-750 RM), dependendo do poder de negociação, e duram 4 horas, com várias paragens. Numa delas, entramos numa área protegida e nadamos num lago de água doce. Uma atividade a não perder para os mais radicais.
There are lots of islets around Langkawi and the best way to explore / contemplate them is to ride around the coast by Jet ski. These organized tours cost between €120 and €160 (600-750 RM), depending on your bargaining talent, and it's about 4 hours, with several stops. In one of them, we can enter into a protected area and swim in a freshwater lake. A must do for the more radicals.
The best beaches in Langkawi are located in the north of the island. They have very thin white sand and a warm, bluish-green sea, from where we can not get out without being completely shrouded... What we liked the most was Pasir Tengorak beach (a kind of Galapinhos in Arrábida, but with water at 30 degrees)! There is another one very acceptable next to the Ritz Four Seasons Hotel: Tanjung Rhu.
In south of Langkawi (next to the ferry terminal) there is a square with a sculpture of a giant eagle (symbol of the island).
The country is mostly Muslim but also tolerant with other religions. There is a buddhist temple on the east side of the island: Wat Koh Wanararm (Lucky temple). It's not much crowded and it's possible to be in peace, meditate and take photos of the environment and the statue of Kuan Yin carved on a rock.
Ficámos no Hotel Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa, perto do centro turístico da ilha, mas afastado da confusão. Tem bons restaurantes, piscinas grandes, um lago e uma praia com o melhor pôr do sol da ilha!
Last point but not least... is to take advantage of the facilities and infrastructure of the hotel. A "dolce fare niente" so good on vacation!

Com alguma negociação, é possível ter um barco tradicional em exclusivo para 2 por 62€ (300 RM) e fazer este passeio completamente ao nosso ritmo. Mesmo com uma chuvada tropical, foi lindo observar as águias; contemplar as formações rochosas e os mangais nas margens do rio; parar numa estação flutuante com viveiros de peixe e marisco e ainda entrar em grutas com morcegos pequenos...With some bargain, it's possible to ride a traditional boat exclusively for 2 by 62€ (300 RM) and make this tour completely at our own pace. É imprescindível visitar e até nadar em algumas das quedas de água naturais que caem das montanhas! Nós fomos a 3: Durian Perangin, Air Terjun Temurun e Telaga Tujuh (as famosas 7 Wells waterfalls com 638 degraus até ao topo).

As melhores praias de Langkawi estão situadas a norte da ilha. Têm areia branca e muito fina e um mar cálido, verde-azulado, de onde não conseguimos sair sem ser completamente encarquilhados... A que mais gostámos foi a praia Pasir Tengorak (uma espécie de Galapinhos na Arrábida, mas com água a 30 graus)! Há outra praia também muito aceitável, junto ao Hotel Ritz Four Seasons: Tanjung Rhu.The best beaches in Langkawi are located in the north of the island. O país é maioritariamente muçulmano, mas é também tolerante com outras religiões. Existe um templo budista na zona Este da ilha: Wat Koh Wanararm (Lucky temple). Não é muito visitado e é possível estar em paz, meditar e tirar fotos do ambiente e da estátua Kuan Yin esculpida sobre a rocha.The country is mostly Muslim but also tolerant with other religions. Tem bons restaurantes, piscinas grandes, um lago e uma praia com o melhor pôr do sol da ilha!

We stayed at the Hotel Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa, near the tourist center of the island, but away from the hassle. It has good restaurants, great pools, a lake and a beach with the best sunset on the island!
